Plug-in solar rules in Utah

In effect since May 7, 2025

Is plug-in solar allowed in Utah?

Yes. HB 340 (2025), Utah Code ยง 54-15-601 has applied since May 7, 2025.

How much power can I connect?

Up to 1,200 W of inverter output.

What do I need to do?

Check these requirements before you connect a kit.

  • Certified by UL or an equivalent nationally recognized testing laboratory, meets the current National Electrical Code and cannot energize the building's wiring during a power outage.
  • No notification to the utility is needed.

Can a landlord or HOA stop me?

Renters have no specific protection.

Will I be paid for power I export?

No. There is no payment for power sent to the grid, so savings come from the electricity you use yourself.

Other details

The limit applies to each device. Kits are exempt from interconnection agreements and net metering; Rocky Mountain Power says it does not pay for power that kits feed back.
